The Short Answer

Today's Verse

"When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, 'Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?' He said to Him, 'Yes Lord; you know that I Love you.' Jesus said to him, 'Feed my lambs.'" – John 21:15

This is one of my favorite stories in scripture. For the longest time though, I overlooked its powerful message. In this story, Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves Him, the first two times Peter answers it the same way, without real meaning behind it. Finally on the last time, Peter thinks about what Jesus is really asking and answers with a true answer. Don't we do the same thing in our lives today? We say things to God just to say them, and don't really think about the true meaning behind what we are saying. Then in our weakest moment we cry out in earnest desire and love, "Jesus, help me" or "Jesus, I need you" and He comes to our aid. Here is a thought, why not share our truest thoughts with God from the beginning. - Commentary by Matthew J. Elliott

Today's Prayer

Father, Sometimes we tend to answer things just to answer them and don't really think about what we are saying. Today, I pray that you help us get past the 'short answers' and embrace the more meaningful ones. Amen.
